I haven't looked up the reference but IIRC near 300 people were drowned around Miami some years back in this same effect. The wind blew so strong seaward as to empty the sand for some significant distance and then the eye arrived.
A huge number of ninnies went outside and went beachcombing on the cleared flats. When the eye passed many were too far out to outrun the incoming storm surge and many weren't seen again.

It's been a long road and not all of it was paved.

This angered me as well. Hopefully you have heard from SR's parents by now.

FPL is out where we are (Mr. ABC checked it out on their site.) Still waiting to hear what else happened down there. Our place really should be OK from the wind because we have
high impact resistant glass & window frames.

Fox Business News is concentrating on Jacksonville where Fla Gator is. Hopefully he and family are OK.

Just read on the CU Weather Channel thread that SR *has* heard from his folks.

    Happy to hear that!

SR's parents have Comcast and have no TV nor internet. But they're lucky to have the generator and no flooding. SR checked their elevation and it was 22 feet above sea level, so figured they wouldn't be in too much trouble with flooding.

I'd like to find out how Mote Marine Aquarium in Sarasota fared. We volunteered there for some time. In the 5 years there many friends were made. Also wondering if Siesta Beach emerged unscathed.
