LAS VEGAS (AP) -- The robots won this one.
A driverless shuttle bus was involved in a minor crash with a semi-truck less than two hours after it made its debut on Las Vegas streets Wednesday in front of cameras and celebrities.
The human behind the wheel of the truck was at fault, police said.
Las Vegas police officer Aden Ocampo-Gomez said the semi-truck's driver was cited for illegal backing. No injuries were reported.
"The shuttle did what it was supposed to do, in that it's (sic) sensors registered the truck and the shuttle stopped to avoid the accident," the city said in a statement. "Unfortunately the delivery truck did not stop and grazed the front fender of the shuttle. Had the truck had the same sensing equipment that the shuttle has the accident would have been avoided."
The oval-shaped shuttle that can transport up to 12 people has an attendant and computer monitor, but no steering wheel and no brake pedals. It uses GPS, electronic curb sensors and other technology to make its way. It was developed by the French company Navya and was tested in January in Las Vegas.

doesn't this defeat the purpose of a driverless vehicle? you still gotta pay the attendant to be in the vehicle.

The way I see it in the photo is the rig was turning left and the stupid silly ass bus kept going, you would have to be a complete moron to board a driver-less vehicle in Vegas or any other city. So I guess since the cop said the rig was at fault the city has the cops paid off, I would think about a thousand ambulance chasers are all standing in line to hand out their card to the driver-less bus. Who ever turned it loose on the public streets will be sued by night fall ! They can't even safely handle normal street and freeway traffic and they want to force this bullshit on the public simply because some politician has his palms greased.

I'd take my chances with the driverless bus over driving with my mom. Bless her heart, she was a terrible driver. She deserved kudos for learning to drive at 62, after my dad died, but her poor car was dented all over. Mom got upset because she hit a bus. Her excuse? The bus got in her lane. i told her that is why cars have a steering wheel and brakes. She got angry with me.

She's been gone for 16 years now. I miss getting her out of all her little scrapes. She was a 4'10" cutie.

The bus sensed the truck and stopped. The truck kept turning and backing until it hit the bus. You can't stop drivers from doing stupid stuff.

That said, I will not ever own a self-driving auto.
It's not how old you are, it's how you got here.
It's been a long road and not all of it was paved.
