Today was officially my very first day in the Army Nov 11/65 I believe 52 years ago Veterans day was not on the 11th. I was in Training company A/1/2 at Ft Polk La just 80 miles from where I now live. Never thought I would be living here in La but the world turns a bit slower for me now. I was working for the Mid West City Fire Department as a dispatcher at the newest of their stations which they made Headquarters after many many years. One of the firemen there at the time became the chief some 20 years or so ago, I tried to get in touch with the guy because he had sold me an old 54 Chrysler he had inherited from an Aunt. I have never been back to Oklahoma City and hoping some day before my time comes I want to go back and visit my Grandfathers grave site. He had driven me to Will Rogers airport the evening I left for Fort Polk and that was the last time I spoke to him because he died about 6 months later. He was a real character, during the depression he actually had a pretty good job working for the highway department there around Oklahoma City. He hired my Grandmothers Brother Cecil and he told me a story about the old man a very long time ago. He told me that the old man always took a fifth of booze with him each day and he would hide the bottle somewhere on the side of the road and drive back and fourth all day sipping out of that bottle. One day he forgot where he had put the bottle and uncle C told me it was driving him crazy and he drove up and down the highway all day looking for that bottle, he never found it. True story
