pnwmom (86,676 posts) Atlantic: The Odds of Impeachment are Dropping

As sickening as this thought is, the possibility of impeachment seems to be dropping, despite the indictments and proven collusion, simply because the Republican electorate is still solidly behind Trump.

If we have a majority in the 2018 House, and try to impeach him and fail to convict -- which is a real possibility because conviction requires a 2/3 vote in the Senate -- then the backlash by his supporters could help re-elect him in 2020.

If Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer decide that it's not worth the risk of a failed impeachment attempt -- that the most important thing is to make sure he's not re-elected to a second four year term -- then I'm not going to second guess them. I'm going to focus my anger on DT, not on any Dem.

But bringing impeachment charges against Trump, and actually forcing him from office, are two vastly different things. And while the former may be more likely today than it was half a year ago, the latter is actually less likely. Since Robert Mueller became special counsel in May, the chances of the House of Representatives passing articles of impeachment—and the Senate ratifying them—have probably gone down.

That’s because impeachment is less a legal process than a political one. Passing articles of impeachment requires a majority of the House. Were such a vote held today—even if every Democrat voted yes—it would still require 22 Republicans. If Democrats take the House next fall, they could then pass articles of impeachment on their own. But ratifying those articles would require two-thirds of the Senate, which would probably require at least 15 Republican votes.

That kind of mass Republican defection has grown harder, not easier, to imagine. It’s grown harder because the last six months have demonstrated that GOP voters will stick with Trump despite his lunacy, and punish those Republican politicians who do not.

Among Republicans, Trump’s approval rating has held remarkably steady. The week Mueller was named, according to Gallup, Trump’s GOP support stood at 84 percent. In the days after Donald Trump Jr. was revealed to have written, “I love it” in response to a Russian offer of dirt on Hillary Clinton, it reached 87 percent. In Gallup’s last poll, taken in late November, it was 81 percent. Trump’s approval rating among Republicans has not dipped below 79 percent since he took office. None of the revelations from Mueller’s investigation—nor any of the other outrageous things Trump has done—has significantly undermined his support among the GOP rank and file.

    1. Give it some more time.

Once they pass this shitbag tax bill and the midterms come into view, the knives are really going to come out.

    2. Poor research by The Atlantic. There are two falsehoods in the first three paragraphs.

Impeachment conviction occurs in the Senate, not the House. Also, Clinton was impeached in 1998, over a year into his second term following his re-election in 1996.

    10. The first time WE

    underestimated his support,
THIS time they underestimate our hatred of him.
And that's what this is all about - unhinged hate because HILLARY LOST.

    11. I dont think it will get that far.

Like Nixon I think he’ll be driven from office in disgrace, get a full pardon from whoever his successor is, and spend the rest of his life as a saint to a very deranged segment of our populace. That’s how I think it goes down.

    14. NY AG Schneiderman will never stop

Until the Trumps have forfeited every asset they have. No pardon for state crimes.

I can settle for Trump being poor.
Yes the NY AG is a typical liberal who is a hater.

    20. If Demorats take back the house

they must impeach Trump. I don't see how impeaching Trump runs the risk of getting Trump re-elected. Bill Clinton and Trump's situation are not comparable. Clinton's overall average approval rating was 61% among all voters during his 2nd term. So what Trump's approval rating is 79% among republicans? Bill Clinton's approval rating among Democrats was 89% before impeachment and jumped up to 91% after impeachment.

Even if Trump got the same 2% bump Clinton got that still would not be nowhere near enough to get him re-elected. Will take more than hardcore Trump supporters to get him re-elected. Clinton and Trump have two very different starting points. Clinton was very popular before impeachment and everyone who is not a republican hates Trump right now.
    Liberals love Clinton the predator.

    21. And you will be satisfied if he's impeached but not convicted? n/t
    standingtall (998 posts)

    22. Yes although I would prefer him to be impeached and convicted in the Senate

Justice must be pursued. Trump losing an election is not justice for what he has done. Politicians lose elections all the time without doing anything wrong. Simply losing an election is not a fitting punishment for Trump.

At the very last Democrats could force republicans to either impeach or go on the record with their vote having defended a criminal that committed treason against the United States. I would be satisfied at least Democrats pursued justice.
Yes, it's still hate all the time from the temper tantrum throwing liberals.

Since there has NEVER been any crime being shown despite a year of squawking by the media. It is time for the fishing (Mueller) investigation to end, since there is no crime at all.

despite the indictments and proven collusion,
the only thing that is proven is how bat shit crazy the democrat party has become since losing the election last year.
The price of freedom is something the protected will never know.

There has NEVER been evidence of collusion, it is an illusion the media runs with since they want to slime Trump any way they can. Here is what really happened, which is why Flynn was fired by Trump in the first place. Has NOTHING to do with collusion at all:

    The Last Refuge

Michael Flynn Pleads Guilty to Lying To FBI – Same Misleading Statements That Got Him Fired…

    by Sundance

    December 1,2017

    Excerpt:

Former National Security Adviser General Michael Flynn has pleaded guilty to a process crime of lying to FBI investigators about the content of a December 29th phone call with Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak. The conversation occurred the same day that then-president Barack Obama announced sanctions against Russia for its interference in the 2016 election.

This is the same misleading information that led to the White House firing Michael Flynn.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has charged Flynn (full pdf below) with falsely telling FBI agents that he did not ask the ambassador “to refrain from escalating the situation” in response to the sanctions.

According to the plea, while being questioned by FBI agents on January 24, 2017, Flynn also lied when he claimed he could not recall a subsequent conversation with Kislyak, in which the ambassador told Flynn that the Putin regime had “chosen to moderate its response to those sanctions as a result of [Flynn’s] request.”

Furthermore, a week before the sanctions were imposed, Flynn had also spoken to Kislyak, asking the ambassador to delay or defeat a vote on a pending United Nations resolution. The criminal information charges that Flynn lied to the FBI by denying both that he’d made this request and that he’d spoken afterward with Kislyak about Russia’s response to it.

There was nothing wrong with the incoming national-security adviser’s having meetings with foreign counterparts or discussing such matters as the sanctions in those meetings. However, lying to the FBI is the process crime that has led to Flynn’s admissions herein:

Yes collusion was proven..............................as happening with the liberals and hillary's inner circle. hard to impeach the other guy or party when you learn your own moron was acting to perform a coup against a political opponent before he was even elected. Hanging would be too quick for this bunch and a firing squad would be more appropriate
