America's homeless population rises for the first time since the Great Recession

America’s homeless population has risen this year for the first time since the Great Recession, propelled by the housing crisis afflicting the west coast, according to a new federal study.

The study has found that 553,742 people were homeless on a single night this year, a 0.7% increase over last year. It suggests that despite a fizzy stock market and a burgeoning gross domestic product, the poorest Americans are still struggling to meet their most basic needs.

“The improved economy is a good thing, but it does put pressure on the rental market, which does put pressure on the poorest Angelenos,” said Peter Lynn, head of the Los Angeles homelessness agency. The most dramatic spike in the nation was in his region, where a record 55,000 people were counted. “Clearly we have an outsize effect on the national homelessness picture.”

Ben Carson, secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which produced the report, said in a statement: “This is not a federal problem – it’s everybody’s problem.”

Officials are due to announce the results on Wednesday morning.

No asshole this is a federal problem, this is why you were hired to solve this problem--------------your a brain surgeon by trade, if you can't solve this problem then you need to resigned

So what else is new? Liberals blaming the problems in a liberal state, and liberal county and liberal city on others - and demands OTHERS 'fix' the problem. Just another day in liberal land.

that don't believe in doing anything besides watching people suffer.
Yes the federal government is supposed to fix it..........not the state, county or city govenment.

And if Ben Carson said....this is what is going to happen. You will build x amount of housing for the poor and you will build it here... Can you imagine the yelling screaming and temper tantrums. The reality is that for all the liberals say about helping the 'poor' most of it is empty rhetoric and is simply manipulative.

This is the first salvo in the drumbeat we will be hearing soon:

Yea stock market went up, but only the rich got richer.

Poor are still poor and more of them, Trumps Making America Great Again only makes the richer richer

    etc etc etc

the next comment is the big sell on UBI (Universal Basic Income) a program which we already have, called Welfare, only this will apply to everyone unless you are working, but if you don't want to work then quit your job and get UBI instead. Been saying this for years, when Socialism arrives America will greet it with OPEN arms and parades in the street. It will be touted at the GREAT Equalizer, lifting the poor out of being poor.

Most of the homeless I've encounter have major problems with drugs and booze. They rather live in the woods in middle of Winter then give up drinking and getting stoned. And those who don't have these problems have solved their housing.

My guess is these boobs at DU either ignore the drinking & drug problems , or they think that being a drunk or a stoner is cool .
Either way no one is going to rent space to an asshole that trashing the place and has other assholes hanging around there causing trouble.

Are DU-folk really so DUmb that they believe some group of people actually counted each and every one of nthe claimed 553,742? It's a number pulled out of some activist group's and bureaucrats' rectal cavity.

As for the "housing crisis" on the West Coast, it was created by government. And it could be solved within a few years by government removing the regulatory barriers, permit process barriers, and government nickeling-and-diming developers that make building homes risky and unnecessarily expensive.

My county considers homeless students as students that often live with extended family (often with one or both of their parents) so they are not living on the streets or sleeping in the park, and they have a roof over their heads. Just because the mother or father's name is not on a deed or a lease, that does not always mean someone is homeless.

It has been mentioned often in books/TV/conservative-libertarian radio. No one talks about the homeless while the President has a D by their name. But put a Republican in office and the media reports on it magically.
