The Mary River turtle is a cloacal ventilator (breathes oxygen through its anus) and historically these types of freshwater turtle do not do well in large standing water bodies. Cloacal ventilation allows the species to stay under water for days at a time when the water is flowing and well oxygenated. This species likes to bask in sunny locations.

Mary River turtles use bimodal respiration, and so are capable of absorbing oxygen via the cloaca whilst underwater. However, they do regularly come to the surface to breathe air in the usual way.

In animal anatomy, a cloaca...is the posterior orifice that serves as the only opening for the digestive, reproductive, and urinary tracts (if present) of many vertebrate animals, opening at the vent. All amphibians, birds, reptiles, and a few mammals (monotremes, tenrecs, golden moles, and marsupial moles) have this orifice, from which they excrete both urine and feces; this is in contrast to most placental mammals, which have two or three separate orifices for evacuation. Excretory openings with analogous purpose in some invertebrates are also sometimes referred to as cloacae.
My conclusion: they must come out of the water to mate and breathe "in the usual way" when they do.

After doing several levels of research on herptiles I will submit that is the usual situation for any turtles out there.... But...

It doesn’t allow for all the smart a** remarks or chuckles.

I spent most of two years chasing. trapping, killing freezing and formaldhying herptile bodies from rattlers to Gopherus agassizii. The profs required additional information re: every carcass submitted for inventory.
