(CNN) Hundreds of small earthquakes in Hawaii are shaking the eastern side of Big Island, prompting concerns that Kilauea Volcano could erupt.

Residents in the area should prepare and review emergency plans in case of evacuation, warned the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency on Wednesday.

Officials are keeping watch on Kilauea Volcano, which is one of the world's most active volcanos.

It's located in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which has since closed off nearly 15,700 acres due to "the possibility of a new eruption and unstable geologic activity." But most of the park remains open, according to its statement.

Since Monday, hundreds of earthquakes -- most of them around 2.0 magnitude -- have been recorded in the area. The series of earthquakes came after a collapse of a crater floor of Puʻu ʻŌʻō, which is a volcanic cone in the eastern rift zone of the Kīlauea Volcano.

Doesn't Kilauea erupt on a regular basis?

When I took my Landscapes of National Parks class at WMU as a science class, we learned that the Hawaii volcanos are not as dangerous as the Cascades, even though many of the latter are dormant. The Hawaiian volcanos erupt into lava flows and don't usually spew the big clouds of ash and pyroclastic matter that the Cascades do, like Mt. St. Helens. They just have to project the likely lava flows in Hawaii and keep people out of the way.

Of course, that was in 1983, when they were just coming up with the Yellowstone as one huge caldera theory. Things may have changed since then.

HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey reports a 5.0-magnitude earthquake has struck Hawaii's Big Island.

The temblor Thursday is the latest and largest in a series of hundreds of small earthquakes to shake the island's active volcano, Kilauea, since the Puu Oo (POO'-oo OH'-oh) vent crater floor collapsed and caused magma to rush into new underground chambers. Scientists say a new eruption in the region is possible.

The quake was centered about 4.3-miles (6.9 kilometers) deep on the south flank of Kilauea. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says the earthquake was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami.

Earthquakes in the region have been happening consistently since the Puu Oo crater collapsed on Monday.

I haven't read anything about the environmental whack jobs decrying the ash, sulfur dioxide, heat and acid being produced by this event being bad for the environment.

Something not much is being spoken about is that the south side of the island has been sliding seaward for years. If the blow is big enough it could cause the land to break loose and crash in the the sea. This could create a super tsumani of up to 1000 feet tall. It would spread out and do serious dames to the Pacific facing coasts on the ring of fire.
