Mexico pursues appeal to stay executions in US

THE HAGUE, Netherlands - Mexico made an emergency appeal to the U.N.'s highest court Thursday to block the execution of its citizens on death row in the U.S.

Mexico's chief advocate Juan Manuel Gomez-Robledo said the U.S. was "in breach of its international obligations" by disregarding a 2004 judgment by the U.N.'s International Court of Justice, which ruled Mexicans were denied the right to consular advice after their arrests, as guaranteed by an international treaty.

The court, informally known as the World Court, has ruled that the Mexicans were entitled to "review and reconsideration" of their trials and sentences to determine whether the violation of the 1963 Vienna Convention affected their cases.

President Bush accepted the judgment and asked state courts to review the cases.

Texas refused, and the issue went to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled last March by a 6-3 vote that Bush lacked the authority to compel state courts to comply with the judgment from The Hague. The Vienna Convention cannot be binding on the states unless Congress enacts legislation enforcing it as federal law, the Supreme Court said.

How is it that Mexico wants the world court to side with them when the same court has stated that a sovereign nation has the right to enforce it's own borders? Selective judicial review?

    Ooooh, Texas? Adios Little Buddy.
At Coretta Scott King's funeral in early 2006, Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert Kennedy, leaned over to him and whispered, "The torch is being passed to you." "A chill went up my spine," Obama told an aide. (Newsweek)

Jose Medellin is an animal............he was one of a gang that brutally raped and murdered two teenage girls whose only mistake was to take a short cut along a railroad track in Houston. The two girls were repeatedly raped by the gang members and strangled to death.....Then the thugs bragged about the crimes to family and friends. Cops found the decomposing bodies four days after the girls were reported missing. The bodies were so badly decomposed, they had to be identified by dental records

The Mexican nationals are here illegally and committing crimes...and the US is not supposed to follow its own laws? That's quite a precedent, isn't it.

Mexico is opposed to the death penalty, yet I've heard their prisons are pretty deadly, in and of themselves.

    I find that ironic.

If anyone ever has any doubts about the death penalty, just imagine that happening to a female relative or friend of yours, and your mind will be made up.

Mexico should be told where to go

The 51st State should have exhausted all its legal avenues in the USA first. the World Court has no jurisdiction in the US. Let the UN attack, oh yeah, they don't have troops.

We should invade, conquer, and annex Mexico. Make it a territory of the US.

Why bother? They're all coming here anyway...

Seriously, when Mexico respects the integrity of our border, then they can worry about how we apply our laws to their criminal aliens. The illegals arrive here with the collusion of the Mexican government. Mexico could very easily shut down the tunnels and staging areas on their side of the border. They refuse to do so because illegal immigration provides a safety valve for their people, who cannot earn a decent living in the corrupt kleptocracy and have to go outside of the country to send money back. A serious reduction in illegal immigration would put serious pressure on the Mexican government to reform itself and start providing a stable environment for economic growth.
