For centuries, humans have celebrated with booming, bright, and colorful fireworks. For one Italian city, though, that tradition ended in 2015, and animals and possibly even vets suffering from combat post-traumatic stress disorder are benefitting from it.

These days, when there’s a big celebration in Collecchio, a town in the Italian province of Parma, the fireworks are silent, as required by law since 2015 and out of respect for Collecchio’s animal population. The star of the show is Setti Fireworks, a company that makes dazzling fireworks without the thundering report.

They also were talking in the article about it would help vets (not dog docs) with PTSD. Fireworks on the 4th are fine, but in our neighborhood it goes on for way too long. Our poor dog Darlene was terrified of them. We tried buying her a "thunder coat", but it didn't help. Our greyhound Bella doesn't like them, but isn't traumatized by them either.

Disneyland has been using air cannons to launch their fireworks shows for over 13 years. While this was primarily done to reduce smoke from traditional black powder lift charges, it also makes for a very quiet launch; more of a whoosh than a loud boom. At altitude, however the shells break with the same loud report as traditionally launched fireworks. I dont really see how you can avoid the loud report without degrading the performance of the shell.
