The University of California recently highlighted a study claiming that opposition to welfare programs is a direct result of “white fear.”

On June 7, UC Berkeley Media Relations representative Yasmin Anwar published a blog post on the University of California’s news website, arguing that "white Americans’ fear of losing their socioeconomic standing in the face of demographic change may be driving opposition to welfare programs.”

The post, titled “Welfare backlash tied to white fear of declining status,” also underscores that “whites are major beneficiaries of government poverty assistance.”

To support those claims, the university official references a recently published research project conducted by UC Berkeley and Stanford University, in which “researchers analyzed nationally representative survey data of over 7,000 adult American men and women,” and conducted two additional experiments with 400 participants

Welfare doesn't really give the poor any economic power. It keeps the roof over the heads, food in the fridge, and covers medical insurance. That's about all it does. It doesn't help people get ahead, unless they are cheating.

Isn't keeping a roof over your head etc. economic power ?

Some landlords are willing to accept welfare clients because of the guaranteed money they receive.

Food stores have great deal of power to lobby the Congress to keep food stamps as they are now. They make big money on people use food stamps. Some people exchange food stamps for cash. Bars, strip clubs, and drug dealers don't do badly either.

Doctors make money on medical assistance because they now have more patients to see. (despite their complaining.

As a side benefit, there are hundreds of thousands of local, state and federal workers on payrolls to administer these programs.
