Where 3 Million Electric Vehicle Batteries Will Go When They Retire

The first batches of batteries from electric and hybrid vehicles are hitting retirement age, yet they aren’t bound for landfills. Instead, they’ll spend their golden years chilling beer at 7-Elevens in Japan, powering car-charging stations in California and storing energy for homes and grids in Europe.
Lithium-ion car and bus batteries can collect and discharge electricity for another seven to 10 years after being taken off the roads and stripped from chassis—a shelf life with significant ramifications for global carmakers, electricity providers and raw-materials suppliers.

Lithium batteries eventually turn into something you have to practically send back to a lithium mine and start over to recycle. It's still chemically lithium of course, but it breaks down into little internal current loops that make it impossible to deliver more than a trickle of power and there's no way to fix it once the battery gets to that point. There's really no economical way to collect and send the dead ones back up the distro chain.

I think they have a great point that will end up making somebody some real decent money.

When any device I have that uses AA units “dies” or shows a reduction in efficiency I put them in my wireless mouse reserves box. I never use a new battery there and those that let a clock lose 10 minutes in 24 hours will last weeks in the mouse.

Any home designed for solar power contains similar batteries so use those that have lost the efficiency to power an auto to store solar or wind power to run something that doesn’t need the full power that an automobile does. I.e. read the article.
