Hearsay several times removed is never a great source. Coughlin had his enemies.

Now, if you had told me Francis had gay affairs, I might believe that.

Clergymen are bound to vows of obedience, poverty and chastity. They are not authorized to have sexual relations of any kind. Personally, I don't care about anyone's sexuality, as long as it doesn't hurt others. It's absolutely none of my business.

When 80% of abuse cases among Catholic priests are homosexual in nature, there is a homosexual problem as well as a general mortal sin issue.

The pro-klan stuff about Coughlin is local history, cited in any article about the history of the Shrine of The Little Flower, which is a beautiful church and I think it's a national shrine. He had a radio show. He was a local celebrity in the 1930s. His hatred for Jewish and Black Americans was well known.

My dad's story about his dad was just added for humor. Even dad, when he told it to me, said he never knew how much of what his dad told him was real and how much was bullshit. I never met that Grandpa, but I know he was a union-hater and I'm guessing he wasn't really fond of Catholics.

Then, there really wasn't any basis for the post.
