During a climate change town hall event, Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) criticized Elon Musk’s Tesla for receiving government funding, saying that the government got “no return on our investment” in the company.

Speaking at a climate change town hall organized by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont recently, Democratic Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Elon Musk’s electric car manufacturer Tesla over the company’s use of taxpayer funds. “When we as a public choose to invest in new technologies, we deserve a return on that investment,” Ocasio-Cortez said when discussing government investments in green energy.

Ocasio-Cortez further stated: “For far too long, we gave money to Tesla, we gave money to a ton of people and we got no return on our investment that the public made in creating technologies, and it’s about time we get our due because it’s the public that funded and financed a lot of innovative technologies.”

Yeah, she's agreeing with free-market principles on this one. Plus she just comes right out and slams Musk, as he should be slammed. She beat 98% of Republicans to the punch.

Well, actually, the proper role for the government 'Investing' in new technologies is at the 'Blue sky' point where there isn't a return on investment, but a long-term boost to the total economy, like a city building an industrial park. The whole point of doing it is precisely that there's either not enough short/mid-term ROI for commercial interests to fund it, or that it requires titanic capital or resources only obtainable by the government itself.

If ROI s going to rule the validity of green energy government expenditures, Alexandra, we can cut about 98% f green energy spending out of the budget right now.

A (minor) disagreement if you will DAT. Investing in any new technology outside of national defense and security is outside the government's purview. R&D should be done and paid for by the industry that will profit from same.

Well, I disagree, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Mine is based on the probability that any major new technology will affect national security in that failing to explore it while others do puts us at a strategic disadvantage; the interstate highway system, for instance, was actually passed on the basis of its strategic value, not its affect on commerce, based on the example of the Autobahn and how it facilitated movement of forces and strategic materials for the Reich, while the rail net was under relentless attack. I believe it's also fairly within the scope of the Commerce Clause, especially considering the numerous much-more-dubious Federal laws the Supreme Court has validated based on it which have no discernable actual relationship to commerce.

As I said, a minor disagreement. The interstate highways, Ike’s highways we called them when they were being built, were designed and constructed on very definite ideas for defense of the country. Built to support heavy equipment, move tanks, and lots of straight stretches for air service as needed. JFK’s pet project regarding going to the moon had a heavy load of defense segments brought to fruition. The defense satellite status owes a lot to that research. I still regard a lot of funding thrown at various R&D projects as subsidizing outfits that don’t need or deserve it.
