A new initiative by a small company has compelled more than two dozen of the world’s biggest brands to begin testing reusable packaging.

Loop, launched today at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, has amassed a blue-chip roster of companies, all of which are piloting a new system of high-quality packaging that can be returned and refilled again and again. In essence, it changes the ownership model of packaging from consumer to producer.

It sounds good but is it cost effective?

I'm old enough to remember the old small returnable Coke bottles, and the old product. The bottles were heavy, always scratched & chipped. The Coca Cola was as good as cola could get. The new ( newer ) recipes are terrible. The flavor is not even close to the Coca Cola from the 40s & 50s. It was very crisp, just delicious. Something went very wrong. I mean how do you improve on perfect?

They stopped doing the return soda bottles sometime in the early 80's.

People got money for the bottles they returned, which was a great motivator.
The nearest they've got now is recycling the cans.

Michigan requires and returns deposits on their plastic bottles. My g’son made himself $30-40 carting off plastic bottles from his aunt’s apartment complex in Ann Arbor last month. He tried some they had in the car from VA. The machine kept the bottles but didn’t refund any money. They scan the label for a MI identifiers. I assume they are recycled, not re-used.

The soda bottles of my youth might go through a plant a hundred times or more according to how the were treated during circulation.
