Panera Bread will be closing its last pay-what-you-can restaurant, located in Boston, on Feb. 15.

The move comes after the business's "nonprofit" restaurant concept became unviable. On Tuesday, Eater reported that none of the restaurant's five locations was self-sustaining.

    What are the details?

The program, Panera Cares, was initially created to serve food to low-income people nine years ago in 2010. The concept was a pay-what-you-want business model in which patrons visiting the restaurant could eat for a donation.

In 2010, Ron Shaich — the company's founder and former CEO — said that the program's aim was a "test of humanity."

"Would people pay for it?" he asked during a TEDxStLouis talk. "Would people come in and value it?"

The answer was apparently "no," because here we are less than a decade later, with no Panera Cares' franchises running in the black.

The outlet also reported that through the project's nine-year run, many of the locations were "mobbed" by homeless people and students who ate without donating. Because of the "mob," one location was forced to limit its homeless patrons' meals to a few per week.
I'd say his humanity test flunked.

Honestly..... who is shocked at the result?

I will say, I'm very surprised they floated this so long. How much did they lose?

We could say they are spending like drunken sailors. That would be unfair to drunken sailors, they're spending their OWN money.

No kidding! Forgot this even happened. But we probably had a thread about it.

Reminds me of that 300 pound young comedian 20 years ago, he had a routine about eating in a Chinese buffet where you could eat all you wanted, the old Chinese chef came running out to his table swinging a meat cleaver and hollering you go now you stay too long, you eat tooooo much you go now heh

Interestingly enough, Jon Bon Jovi's Soul Kitchens, which has the options of "pay what you can" or "volunteer to pay for you meal", has been running since 2011, providing meals, training and assistance. Maybe Panera should have done some comparisons and see what those are doing different.

We have a couple of local restaurants that provide free meals to the poor. They are generously supported by their customers for that reason.

Part of the problem with Panera is their food choices and quality have not remained consistent. They are overpriced for small portions. Their bagels are okay, but Einstein's are better. Their coffee is okay, but Starbucks and McDonalds' are better. I like their French onion soup, though, that still is good.

As I've discovered, their menu is different depending on location. Wanted a broccoli cheese bread bowl a while back. The Panera a mile from me doesn't have it. Weird.

They could have made it work if they really wanted to. they could have put the management on minimum wage for a start and then forgone profits. AOC would approve of that.
