Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is proposing what some opponents are calling a draconian gas tax increase to fix the stateís crumbling road infrastructure.

Whitmerís budget proposal will include a 45-cent gas tax increase, which would be phased in over three separate intervals, the governorís spokeswoman Tiffany Brown told reporters Monday. The rate would begin increasing in October, hit its second phase in April 2020, and ease into its final phase by the end of that year.

The increase is expected to generate roughly $2 billion a year in additional revenue for roads, according to media reports. Whitmer, a Democrat who ran on fixing Michiganís roads, will present her idea to lawmakers Tuesday during a joint meeting of the House and Senate appropriations committees.

More Michiganders moving to Texas again. We suffered through that in the early 80ís, we donít need it again. Between CA and MI itís getting crowded.

Houston is claiming expectations of growing by an amount equal to the current population of Dallas, Austin, Corpus Christi and San Antonio in a very short time. They will be coming out here and make me move again to avoid the herd.
It's not how old you are, it's how you got here.
It's been a long road and not all of it was paved.

As california goes, so goes the rest of the Nation. What assurances are in place to ensure the revenues generated from the increased taxes are specifically earmarked for road repairs only, and not some politician's pet project..

    Keep expecting more people.

Why is it when people leave Blue States because of high taxes and massive regulation the jerkazoids running those states think raising taxes and creating more regulation will get them to stay.

I have never heard one person ever say " I'm leaving because my taxes aren't high enough. "

The unspoken locked-in guarantee is that no matter what the price is, it'll be 20-to-30 cents higher per gallon at the (Mackinaw) Bridge and through-out the UP.

Also the carryouts, and now the gas-stations at the Indiana & Ohio borders, are going to make-out like bandits.

Won't have to worry about road construction if no one stays to drive on the roads.

Besides, we haven't finished re-naming Texas fish yet... Walleye is pickerel, but pickerel can be pike... flounder isn't flounder, it's ocean-perch... rock-bass is lake-bass and catfish is channel-cat unless it's too small, etc.

We gave her a way to raise money for the roads without raising the gas tax when we legalized weed last fall. They just need to get the stores licensed and running.

Once a Democrat broaches the subject of a tax increase, the pursuit of it becomes as relentless as the Mounties chasing the Mad Trapper. The state will gobble up the marijuana money AND give you a gas tax increase. before the sun sets on this saga.

The legislature probably won't approve the gas tax. They approved one for Snyder that was supposed to fix the roads and it didn't.
