Maybe a big bird hit a transformer and burst into flames igniting the tank.......fowl play.

    Itís out.

The chemical tank fires that burned for nearly four days at the Intercontinental Terminals Co. plant in Deer Park were extinguished overnight, the company and firefighters say.

Looks like the professionals knew what they were doing. A modern day version of the Adair school who have yet to be recognized.

    New bulletin:

A Deer Park refinery has enacted a shelter in place after low levels of benzene were detected at the facility, company officials said Wednesday.
The shelter in place at Shell Deer Park comes the same day as emergency crews extinguished a blaze at nearby Intercontinental Terminals Co., a fire that lasted nearly four days and which caused a plume of black smoke to linger over the Houston area.

If we had AOC's electric train sets this wouldn't happen!

Well, it wasn't so much that the professionals knew what they were doing as it was the tanks finally melted and they were able to get the foam into the area where the product was.

I work right here in La Porte and we could see the smoke right out in our back lay down yard. As in, we could almost actually see the fire. It's only a few miles behind us here. I'm a project manager for a company that specializes in building and repairing tanks in the refineries. The thing I first noticed when that fire was first shown on TV was that NONE of those tanks appeared to have any foam lines on them. On a cone roof tank that was rather odd. If you don't have foam lines you have no way to get foam inside the tank if the product catches fire so basically all they could do was get the foam and water onto the exterior of the tanks and try to keep the fire from spreading. Once the tanks collapsed it opened them up and they could then 'go on the attack' to extinguish the fires.

We are under another 'Shelter in Place' right now and Hwy 225 is again closed due to elevated levels of benzene in the area from the same plant, ITC. I can guarantee you that plant is going to have some major headaches coming and I couldn't imagine what it must be like to be in any administrative position with them at present.

If it is found there were no foam lines on those tanks like I think, they're in a heap o' trouble.

It usually takes me an hour and 45 minutes to get to work on Mondays and I stay down here during the week. This past Monday it took me THREE HOURS to get to work with Hwy 225 being closed. For some stupid reason they left the ramp to 225 from beltway 8 open but when you got to the bottom where I would turn to go east, they had it barricaded. They were forcing 6 lanes of traffic onto a 3 lane southbound frontage road on beltway 8. It was a nightmare.

Thanks for the closeup and knowledgeable input KC. My field is upstream although I grew up in the middle of mid- and downstream facilities. I see accusations today of ITC dumping a million gallons or more of toxics during Harvey. Add that to what you observed it sounds to me like they may be out of business and bankrupt by the end of the year.

BTW, itís being reported that the benzene is from a Shell facility east of ITC. Truth or fiction? Given the LSM, who knows.
