Germany's military spending is set to fall below its NATO targets, in the latest flashpoint in Berlin's long-running row with Washington.

The latest German budget plans, revealed on Monday, will see defence spending drop well below the two per cent of GDP expected from NATO members.

U.S. ambassador Richard Grenell said the cuts were a 'worrisome signal', while President Donald Trump has repeatedly accused Germany of freeloading on U.S. military might.

But German Chancellor Angela Merkel rejected the U.S. criticism, saying Germany will not cut foreign aid to raise military spending.

NATO today is effectively the United States, Poland and Romania. Germany has been neutralized in any conflict involving Russian aggression in Eastern Europe by Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2.

Nord Stream 1 is a 55 BCM natural gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany completed in 2012. Nord Stream 2 is another 55 BCM pipeline shceduled for completion later this year. These allow Russia to shutdown land based pipelines to and through the Ukraine without losing their lucrative German customer. Germany comsumes 750 BCM of which 110 BCM will come from Nord Stream. Additionally, beginning in 2017 Germany has been in the process of shutting down ALL of their nuclear power plants which account for 11% of their energy consumption. The Germans have invested half a trillion Euros in solar power with a peak capacity of 50% of their electrical consumption. However, due to the fact that the Sun rarely shines in Germany, this vast solar network only delivers 4%. These facts make the German Economy hostage to Russian natural gas.

NOTE: Natural gas can only be distributed by point to point pipelines, not tankers. LNG (liquefied natural gas) can be shipped across the oceans, but LNG facilities to liquefy are very expensive. The United States produces a glut of natural gas and in some parts of North Dakota and elsewhere it is burned off as a waste product (visible in satellite photos). LNG is primarily produced in Qatar with Japan, South Korea and Spain consuming the bulk of it.

Bottom line: I'm not at all surprised that Germany won't spend on NATO; they need every last Euro to support Merkel's millions of Moslem guest NON-workers.

That's a good breakdown of the situation, energy-wise. I feel like I learned something from it.
