Cal State Dumps ‘Prospector Pete’ Mascot Over Claims that Gold Rush Harmed Indigenous Peoples

California State University is eliminating its 60-year-old “Prospector Pete” mascot, over accusations that gold miners in the 1840s were racists against California’s indigenous populations.

The mascot was born in the 1940s when the university’s founding president, Pete Peterson, exclaimed that the school had “struck the gold of education.” Giving rise to the idea of using a 49ers-styled gold prospector as a mascot, Fox News reported.

But now some say the mascot is a symbol of the “racism” perpetrated by many white prospectors against the native Indians when whites began streaming into the area after the big 1848 gold strike at Sutter’s Mill near Coloma, California, about 50 miles west of Sacramento.

A statement by the university said the Gold Rush was “a time in history when the indigenous peoples of California endured subjugation, violence, and threats of genocide.”

I always thought it as Asians who were mistreated in the gold mining of the West Coast states during the 19th century, not indigenous people.

The average 49er wasn't going to tell anybody he/she found gold till 'later'.

The Gold Rush got outta hand pretty quickly as it is.

I'd vote to keep Prospector Pete. If there was a famous Indian, keep that one too.

Throughout history, there have always been winners and losers when it comes to groups of humans taking land from one another. A tribe or city or state was either strong enough to keep what they claimed or someone bigger came along and took it. Until the mid 20th century that was the one rule of the resource acquisition game. Then something changed and that something was that nuts were put in charge of interpreting history. The Indians in America had resources that others wanted and someone capable of taking it from them came along... and well took it. I refuse to sugar coat this. If history has taught us one thing is that it sucks to be the loser. At that point, the Indians could either join the winner and ride the gravy train or sit around giving dirty looks to the winners and remembering what once was. Now there are no Indians who remember what once was so they sit around and either mope over how things were based on secondhand information or start a casino.

In the end we recognize that this is a hard world and it will stay that way until the Lord decides to change it. Now there are a whole bunch of libs who had a delusion that they could create a utopia of equality despite evidence to the contrary and once they realized that this was never going to happen decided that everyone should be equally miserable instead. They have mastered the fine art of offending everyone possible on the pretext that no one should ever be offended by any thing. In this the libs have finally found their true calling and it gets them as close to being happy as possible for a lib.
Cast your burden on the Lord,
    and he will sustain you;
    he will never permit
    the righteous to be moved.

That is one sloppy article. There is not one California State University, there are 23. And each campus has its own mascot (as well as academic emphases). For example, these are the ten oldest in the CSU system:

    San Jose - Spartans

    Chico - Wildcats

    San Diego - Aztecs

San Francisco - Gators (pun reference to the Golden Gate Bridge and Strait)

    San Luis Obispo - Mustangs

    Fresno - Bulldogs

    Humboldt - Lumberjacks

    Maritime - Keelhaulers

    Pomona - Broncos

    Los Angeles - Golden Eagles

CSU Long Beach is the CSU whose mascot is the 49ers. Knowing where Long Beach is and where the gold country was - hundreds of miles apart - I don't see a connection. It would be more logical for Chico or Sacramento (Hornets) or Stanislaus (Warriors) to have the 49ers as their mascot.

Broadening the time frame, the latter half of the 19th and very early 20th Centuries were hard on California Indians, especially in Modoc, Humboldt, and maybe Del Norte Counties. These are in CA's extreme NW and NE.

WRT Noonie's post, Chinese people were badly treated in the gold fields and as laborers for the western part of the transcontinental RR (the eastern part had the Irish being treated similarly, IIRC).

I think it's high time that the san francisco 49ers football team change their name to prevent causing offense to California’s indigenous populations as well as the Asians who were exploited during that time in history. It's the right thing to do.
