The reason Barr is investigating the origins of the so-called "Steele Dossier" is not political on AG Barr's part, despite what Rachel Maddow might be telling you.

The reason for the investigation is that, quite simply, the facts gleaned by Congressional investigations from 2017-2019 have cast doubt on the authenticity of the document. Combined with other outside investigations based on FOIA requests (eg. Judicial Watch) as well as certain facts that have emerged in the mainstream media (Christopher Steele's own admissions and court testimony about the dossier, for example) these investigations have cast grave doubt that the so-called Steele Dossier had any authentic sourcing at all.

The story of the dossier is simple:

    • The DOJ and FBI under Obama were illegally using the NSA database to spy on political opponents.
    • The spying involved "unmasking" the names of specific people in the NSA data stream.
    • The unmasking requests--which can only be made by a limited number of people--were said to have been made by UN Ambassador Samantha Power, who denies it utterly. This means some of these unmaskings were probably the result of forged requests.
    • This spying seems to have been going on since 2012, but provably since 2015.
    • The objects of the spying in 2015/16 were Trump, Ted Cruz and, also, many others that have not yet been named. Trump became the sole focus as he looked like the primary frontrunner.
    • There were at least three (3) private contractors involved in the illegal data collection. These contractors were used to get around Federal law that makes it illegal for government employees to misuse the NSA database.
    • In 2015, at the height of the illegal spying, DOJ attorney Sally Yates issued a legal opinion that the DOJ could withhold information from the DOJ Inspector General. THE DOJ IG (then, as now, Michael Horowitz) went to Congress to try and get a law passed to allow him to get back his Federally mandated oversight of DOJ.
    • In early 2016, Admiral Mike Rogers, then Director of the NSA, found unusual activity in the NSA database and investigated.
    • By mid-April 2016. Rogers had shut down the FBI/DOJ spying operation and had informed the FISA court.
    • April 19, 2016, journalist Mary Jacoby (wife of Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson) visits Obama at the White House. (Up to this point, Fusion GPS has been doing routine opposition research on Trump for the Marco Rubio campaign. Fusion GPS had previously also served as the "independent analyst" of the Planned Parenthood videos obtained by a CMP sting. A Court of Appeals Judge in Texas challenged Fusion GPS on this point. )
    • In April, 2016, Fusion GPS hires Nellie Ohr, wife of Bruce Ohr, and former CIA contractor, to write the Russian dossier. (Ohr spoke Russian and had an academic background, but had not lived in Russia in decades.) Ohr's dossier is based on a 2007 article written by Glenn Simpson when he was working for the Wall Street Journal. The article is NOT about Trump at all, but about Paul Manafort's dealing in Russia in the early 2000's.
    • We now know that, during this time, Nellie Ohr was feeding information from this writing project (the dossier) to her husband Bruce Ohr and at least one other person at the FBI.
    • Fusion GPS is paid by Perkins Coie, the law firm representing the 2016 Clinton campaign.
    • In June 2016, Christopher Steele, a former MI6 agent now running a private intelligence firm, is hired by Fusion GPS to give some credibility to the Russian aspects of Ohr's dossier. However, Steele has not been in Russia for 25 years. (Steele has since backpedaled on the information in the dossier, testifying in court that there is much in it he cannot vouch for in the document.)
    • In July 2016, the Russian dossier makes it through the FISA court. (It had previously failed to pass muster.)
    • July 2016 is then pegged as the initial starting point of the investigations into Trump, based on the FISA, but this was, of course, untrue, as spying had been occuring for several years beforehand.

The origins of this document must be investigated because the dossier is the ONLY legal basis on which the spying (surveillance) can be said to have been legal in any way. If it is proved that the dossier was just a piece of creative writing (by Nellie Ohr, with help from Christopher Steele) fraudulently sold to the FISA court (by the FBI) and then shopped by the CIA (John Brennan) to members of Congress (like John McCain, who ran with it), then the entire case against Trump goes up in smoke and the illegal activities of anyone who signed off on the FISA application (Comey, Loretta Lynch) has broken the law and must be prosecuted. In additions, anyone involved in this conspiracy (Clinton, DNC, Fusion GPS, possibly Obama) to commit fraud on the FISA court must also be prosecuted. Finally, anyone doing the illegal surveillance (from 2012-2016) must also be prosecuted under Federal law.

    That's why Barr is investigating.

And that's why the Democrat leadership (and some Republicans) are running scared. Illegal use of the NSA database implicates many people.

    Excellent work!

Side note: If Hillary had won in 2016, Admiral Mike Rogers would be on the top of the most likely to be ”Arkancided” list. Just my opinion...

They were so adamant on pinning the Russian collusion fairy tale on President Trump and that Mueller's report will get to the TRUTH of the matter. Now that it is looking more like their people are about to get caught with their hands in the cookie jar, they are calling Barr's investigation into what lead up to the appointment of Mueller political revenge, or something you would find in a bananna republic.

I'd like to pose this question to lurking DUmmies, "If your "people" are not guilty of what Barr is investigating, then why are you so against it? Don't you want the TRUTH to exonerate your "people" of the alleged wrong doing they are accused of?"
"Even if Trump didn't pay Russian hookers to pee on one another to defile a bed the Obamas once slept on it sounds like something he would do and that's all that matters." DemocratSinceBirth, Wed Jan 11, 2017, 09:32 AM

If the folks over at Democratic Underground are willing to listen, you need to just climb over the fence, and come to our side. We won’t bite... Hard.
