Washington (CNN)US F-22 stealth jets intercepted four Russian bombers and two Russian Su-35 fighter jets off the coast of Alaska on Monday, according to a statement from North American Aerospace Defense Command.

The Russian long-range bombers flew into the Air Defense Identification Zone, which extends approximately 200 miles off Alaska's western coast.

US F-22s fighter jets and an E-3 Airborne Early Warning and Control System from North American Aerospace Defense Command "positively identified and intercepted a total of four Tupolev Tu-95 bombers and two Su-35 fighters entering the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on May 20," NORAD said in a statement.

How dare Putin command our USAF to intercept
    his bombers and jets!!!

You think he was trying to make it look like

Trump is colluding to start a war with Russia that they will win and take over the US!!!!11!!!!

But then instead of rewarding Trump, Putin will throw him into a pit in the reopened Gulag on live TV, just to watch the proggie heads explode as they are simultaneously correct and screwed.

Probably the same kind of thing the Russians were doing throughout the 70s and 80s.

Just another episode in a game of tag that's been going on for 60 years. Bears have about zero chance of really penetrating to do actual mischief, these missions basically test our detection threshhold and reaction time so they can take note of it. Even without being able to crack our transmission codes (Not necessarily a given) their signal intelligence can tell when our alert messages to the command, and from there to the interceptors, go out once we detect their aircraft, from which they can infer exactly what distance and altitude their guys were at when we detected them.

We did the same to them a lot when manned bombers were a bigger part of our nuclear offensive capability than they are now, and would use that to send in spy planes as deep as we could and still be able to get them back to friendly territory before the interceptors got to them. On our side that's mostly become redundant due to satellite intelligence, though it's still in some undisclosed level of use for electronic and signal intelligence, since satellites can't really do much on that.

There are ways to give them a false impression of the detection horizon, like setting phase lines for transmitting alert messages instead of sending them at first detection...although that can also tell them where our reporting phase lines and control points are once they plot enough data points.

They screw with us, we screw with them. Neither side expects it to end in an actual engagement, but it is not impossible for that to happen.

In a way. Or like two 7s that each think the other is a 5 and beneath their standards, flirting outrageously with no intention of following through...

Russia's conducting whipstocking drilling-ops at the Arctic. Erecting a well-platform in their backyard, then drilling 'sideways' under our backyard.
