DANBURY, Conn. – On the day that Donald Peters died, he unknowingly provided financial security for his wife of 59 years and their family.

Peters bought two Connecticut Lottery tickets at a local 7-Eleven store on Nov. 1 as part of a 20-year tradition he shared with his wife Charlotte. Later that day, the 79-year-old retired hat factory worker suffered a fatal heart attack while working in his yard in Danbury.

On Friday, his widow cashed in one of the tickets: a $10 million winner which, in her grief over her husband's death, she had put aside and almost discarded before recently checking the numbers.

"I'm numb," Charlotte Peters, 78, said at Connecticut Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill.

Donald Peters usually bought the tickets for 10 weeks at a stretch, so the winning ticket he bought Nov. 1 for the Dec. 2 drawing was among several that Charlotte Peters put aside as she, their three children and two grandchildren coped with his sudden death.

"I was in the grocery store and I had it checked and they told me I was a winner," she said. "I had no idea how much it was."

I buy a scratch off ticket from a vending machine at the supermarket occasionally, and often make a little money on it.
It's not my retirement plan, however. :o

once in a while I'll get a scratch off or one of the "drawing" tickets, but it totals no more than $5 every year or so.

It would be a better investment to buy insurance against lightning strikes.

There is no state lottery in Nevada. Many here drive to the CA border to purchase powerball tickets! (20-30 miles)

The fake lottery tickets are awesome for gifts..it's funny watching someone almost soil themselves thinking they just won 10k....and you keep saying to them, "no way, are you sure?"....or dropping one on the ground, so a friend picks it up and says "I found a ticket"..watching them scratch it off...LOL

In Illinois I would once in a while buy a scratch off ticket and sometimes win. They were also great to put in birthday cards for friends.

When working for ALCOA a bunch of us were in a lottery pool, hitting 5 numbers a couple of times...once my share was over $800 before taxes....not bad.

I know others that were hooked on scratch off tickets, sure they would win, but of course, they woiuld also lose. Sorta like me at the Casino. :D

I just gamble for the free bottled water.

Oh...you think those are funny??

My uncle pulled that one on me one year for my B-Day when I was down in FL. He sent me 6 scratch-offs 5 of which were real NY state ones. They turned out to all be losers.
The sixth one was the fake 10K winner one. I called him up before I read the back of the ticket. He was laughing for quite some time...:p
