Texas town votes to ban abortion, declaring itself ‘sanctuary of the unborn’
    https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/te...-of-the-unborn

WASKOM, June 12, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) — The small eastern Texas town of Waskom voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to ban most abortions within its jurisdiction and declare itself a “sanctuary city of the unborn” amid a packed city council meeting.

The Waskom City Council unanimously passed an ordinance banning abortion within the city, except in cases of rape, incest, or to save a mother’s life, ArkLaTex Homepage reports, as well as a resolution declaring Waskom a sanctuary for preborn babies. Supporters say the exceptions were a necessary compromise to hopefully get the ordinance to reach the U.S. Supreme Court.

The measures passed to the cheers of community members in attendance. Some expressed concern about the legal expenses of a likely lawsuit, which the city could not hope to cover, but supporters said it was worth the risk.

“We decided to take things into our own hands, and we’ve got to do something to protect our cities and to protect the unborn children,” declared Right to Life of East Texas director Mark Lee Dickson. The pro-life organization spearheaded the legislative push.

And Ann Arbor, MI put a law in place a while ago that states that if Michigan and the US were to make abortion illegal, abortion will still be legal in Ann Arbor. Personally, I don't know how that would work, as the feds and state still have to power to obtain warrants and prosecute the cases under state or federal law. Ann Arbor is 50 miles from the Canadian border, though.

Remember, overturning Roe does not make abortion illegal. Pre-Roe, states like New York and California had very liberal abortion laws. Roe just forced other states to become NY and CA.

Ann Arbor will have to worry what their state government does if and when Roe is overturned. If Michigan signs the "abortion-to-the-birth canal" legislation which has been passed in NY and IL (among other places), Ann Arbor will be able to take as many pre-born babies as they want to (and a few born ones, in honor of VA's governor), slice them, dice them, and put them on ice for Stem Express.

The MI legislature, which currently has a slight GOP majority, is trying to pass a fetal heartbeat bill. The governor has stated she will veto it. They don't have enough votes to override it, so they are really just wasting time and paper to try to score political points with conservatives. But a year ago, Gov. Snyder probably would have signed it.

I see. So MI is still up in the air. If the bill can't be passed and there's no chance of an override, it's about politics and 2020. Someone wants a campaign commercial.

MI is definitely in play for dems. Trump carried by about 10,000 votes. But MI got swept by a blue (and pink) wave in 2018-the governor, AG and SOS are all dems and women. Both Senators are, too. The dems took back a house seat in Oakland County, too. The only down side in 2018 for dems was the narrow margin in which Debbie Stabenow kept her seat (4%). Her opponent (John James) is going to challenge Gary Peters for his Senate seat in 2020. We'll see.

Sounds like the Demos played their cards right in the midterms....or maybe they're importing some illegals from SoCal? Seriously, I imagine there was much hand-wringing about Michigan after the 2016 election. 2020 is not easy to predict at the moment. Everybody gets a sound bite with failed pro-life legislation valiantly put forth without a snowball's chance in hell of passing.

From 1992 until 2016, democrats always carried the state in Presidential elections. But during that time, the GOP made in-roads at the state level that led to their total domination of all 3 branches whenever there was a GOP governor. So who carries MI depends on which side motivates their people to get to the polls.

Well, if I had money to place a bet, I'd put my money on Trump for motivation. Of course, Biden is being helped by the entire media complex which wants one of their own back in.

    We'll see.
