With transactions migrating online, customer traffic down and once-bustling branches closing their doors, major banks including Fifth Third, Chase and Capital One are racing to create cozier, millennial-friendly spaces in the Chicago area offering financial advice, technical support and in some cases, cappuccino.

ďThe teller line will disappear over the next few years and all transactions will become self-serve,Ē said Kevin Steele, a senior retail banking consultant with Kronos, a leading workforce management company.

My last mortgage, last several car loans and nearly all of my credit card applications have been online or over the phone. I don't really care to go to an actual bank or credit union.

To each his own. Iíll be at the bank when needed, pay my bills on line and cash checks (at the bank) for carry cash for shopping and lunch. My financial accounting is all done online but I have my own bank officer whom I can call or go visit to visit, get or give opinions or check for any new opportunities to improve my bottom line.
