“Robot umpires” have arrived. The independent Atlantic League became the first American professional baseball league to let a computer call balls and strikes, using the system at its All-Star Game at York, Pa.

Plate umpire Brian deBrauwere wore an earpiece connected to an iPhone in his pocket and relayed the call upon receiving it from a TrackMan computer system that uses Doppler radar.

I'm one who believes that fate needs to be put in the hands of men but this is something that is a long time coming. The strike zone is too erratic and literally changes game to game and sometimes even batter to batter or pitch to pitch. The thing is, though, is that not every strike zone is the same and will have to be reset for each batter. Joe Morgan is 5'7". Aaron Judge is a foot taller. Letters to knees their zone is vastly different. I don't know how they can handle the differences.
Progressivism is a bottomless pit of absurdity.

When I work an Angels game I'm on headset to get the pyro cues, but often hear someone say the phrase "Automatic Strike Zone" everytime there is a bad or questionable call on a pitch. Not sure how it would change the dynamic and feel of the game and a home plate umpire would be still needed to make calls at the plate as well as to keep the game going.

The Atlantic league is serving as a guinea pig for bizarre experiments this year. Post All-Star break, players can steal first base. Kind of. If there is a wild pitch or passed ball, the batter can "steal" first base.

    Idiotic.
