    off Santa Cruz Island.

    The San Jose Mercury doesn't even have a story about it, so gotta go mainstream:

    Appears to be a diving-boat with sleeping-quarters... with a 'late night' fire 'trapping' people in their rooms. I just hope there were no children involved.

    30 people missing after fire on boat, officials 'fear numerous fatalities'

    Ventura County officials "fear numerous fatalities" as rescue operations are underway for boat on fire near Santa Cruz Island, California, Monday morning, public information officer Bill Nash told ABC News.

    Currently 34 people are unaccounted for from the fire on the 75-foot boat, Nash told ABC. Five people were rescued from a dive boat, and officials are hoping people went over the side of the boat and made it to Santa Cruz.

    However, the fire happened overnight, and the sleeping quarters were below deck. Nash said they "greatly fear loss of life here."
    ...
    The Ventura County Fire Department public information officers said in a tweet that their department responded to the fire at about 3:30 a.m. They said the Coast Guard is "helping support rescue operations for people aboard a dive boat."
    Santa Cruz Island is one of the Channel Islands, south of Santa Barbara and west of Oxnard (and NAS Point Mugu), not near the City of Santa Cruz. So the Murky Skews wouldn't be giving this fire "breaking news" coverage.

    I have done several multi day dive trips on the 3 boats owned and operated by Truth Aquatics including the Conception which was the boat involved in the fire. The company runs a first class operation and their boats are the Cadillacs of the California dive boat fleet. The berthing accommodations below deck were luxurious by dive boat standards. I cant imagine the horror or panic the guests endured being trapped below the fire.

    If I recall everything on the boat was powered by diesel (main engines, generators, air tank compressors), so a build up of flammable vapors seems remote, but still possible.

    My condolences to the families of all affected.

    as these pictures show, this was a large and well maintained boat, not some ratty poorly maintained garbage scow

    The crew had sleeping quarters on the upper deck behind the wheelhouse while the passengers were berthed below decks. This explains how the crew was able to get off the ship while the passengers were trapped below.

    not much hope of survival of you were trapped below

    There is nothing more terrifying than a fire on a boat - ship. The below deck confusion is beyond measure. I'm not an expert, but ( with modern materials ), what is it that just flamed up so quickly? Aluminum, steel, fiberglass not flammable.

    Could something have gone wrong with the diving equipment? A spark by a tank or something that started it?

    The Coast Guard is thinking that one of the dive-boat's compressed-oxygen tanks may've been stored wrong... 'falling and puncturing'. Causing an explosion among all of the tanks.

    Scuba tanks don't contain pure oxygen. Just compressed ambient air.

    A couple of people called in to KSFO's morning drive show today who had been on that boat 10-15 times each (independently, not together). They confirmed what Dlr Pyro had said, that the company is top-notch and very safety conscious. A couple of points they made:

    * Contrary to some media reports, there is no lockable hatch between the bunk area and the top deck;

    * Contrary to some media reports, there was an escape to the outside at the rear of the bunk area;

    * The company is meticulous about briefing passenger concerning safety features, including means of emergency exit;

    * The boat had automated fire suppression equipment and heat detectors in key areas such as the engine and generator rooms, and the crew are trained to fight fire.

    Those callers' speculation was that the cause could have been one of the passengers' several laptop or cell phone or camera or etc. lithium batteries that were being charged over night in the bunk or galley area (as is commonly done) caught fire. As I said, speculation.
