1. Rick Warren gave Obama his first real opportunity to address a conservative audience. It was one of the things that helped Obama get elected, in the long run.
2. Rick Warren's book had a lot of appeal outside of evangelical circles-my very liberal, gay-friendly church sells it in the bookstore. The only other "evangelical" authors that the store also sells books by are Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyer and TD Jakes.
GLBTs voted overwhelmingly for Obama. He isn't trying to build new ties with them. He's trying to tell the people who didn't vote for him that he is also their president. It's not like he could pick Rev. Wright for the job, and Billy Graham's health isn't so good anymore. Obama is showing that he understands that he has to build coalitions with conservatives if he is going to get anything accomplished.
It is kind of funny to watch the single issue voters get all worked up about this. They should save their outrage for his judicial picks, if he chooses any who don't support gay rights.
