I stopped giving to United Way years ago but with the recent deliberate mis-interpretation of the chicken shop news release, it’s an interesting development.

United Way to shift charitable focus

The United Way of Greater Houston said it will narrow the focus of its giving to local nonprofits, raising the possibility that some groups will be left out after the charity completes a comprehensive, two-year review of the hundreds of organizations it funds. The change comes as charities are facing declining donations and revenues.

I've disliked the United Way since I worked
for large corps as they basically made you
give "or else". You didn't want your name on
a "list" (that didn't exist of course ) of
    non givers.
May the FORCE be with you!

I got caught in that with my outfit way back when. After I looked at who in Harris county I started turning in a pledge card with a big zero in the amount space. It worked as all they ever published was a participation number, I.e. pledge cards returned.

To avoid the corp politics of being a "non giver"
I would just say Yes, put down a small amount,
and drop out after 2 months. All Mgt cared about
was getting 100% in the beginning, after that
    they didn't give a shit.
May the FORCE be with you!

I know exactly what you’re talking about. They have it set up where it’s almost impossible to say “No”. It was like something out of The Godfather films. Guido is here to wet his beak a little off of your sweat.

The United Way spends a lot of money paying their employees. Not that much of what gets donated actually goes to the agencies that receive their support.

The Salvation Army pays their employees barely enough to live off of. But their programs get most of the money donated to them. When they had the shelter/residential program for foster kids, every kid I had in the program loved it, but hated the food because it was all donated food. The kids learned about how they ran the program on a shoe-string budget, and the kids saw the love that the SA leadership and their employees had for them.

The wording on our intimidation letter made it so my commitment of $0.00 counted as all they looked at was how many returned cards did they get.
