Even though we try to hold ourselves to higher standards, we still get these nutballs in the service. In my career field alone, I've known people who have been busted for arms dealing, drug running, or something as off as chewing their own flesh off at work.

You're right, but Murtha retired honorably having attained the rank of Colonel (having join as an Enlisted man) and was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal. Bit of a differance there. He volunteered during the Korean War, and again during the Vietnam War. This is a man that served Honorably from all accounts. Have you something that says otherwise?

The man has passed away. He can do no more harm. Now let us just remember the things that he did good for our country, and honor them.

We can do this together. You start with Reagan.

May he rest in piece. I disagreed with this man politically in real life but no one, and I mean NO ONE in this thread has the right to judge him in his death. Only God has that right and he has already done so and we do NOT know what his decision was.

Jack Murtha is not and never has been equivalent to Mao, Stalin, Hilter or any number of mass murderers. Nor is he even equivalent to people who have served time in prison for other heinous crimes. This man however did serve in the USMC and for that, this Coastie will respect him for that alone.

God you slay me. Your last reply didn't suprise me. I can't expect you to honor a fallen Marine when you've shown your disrespect to all service members like you have in the past, but to actually try to pull the "liberal" card on me because I respect his service? Get the fuck over yourself.

Im not trashing the man. But Im not sad he's dead either. He put a lot of troops in danger by claiming they were "murderers" during the Iraq war. That's fucked up..

And John Kerry won his purple hearts. Sorry, serving in the military is not a "get of jail free" card when you spend more of your life dis-serving the the military and the nation it defends. Nope, Murtha is where he belongs. I just hope more of his ilk join him soon.

Does the term taking the high road mean anything to you? Murtha is now a non-factor. What he thought is now irrelevant. Have sympathy for his family and be done with it.

As the Capitol reacts to the death of Jack Murtha and remembers his legacy, it's worth pointing out that the news will make it even harder for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to secure the 218 votes needed to pass health care legislation.

Back in November, the House passed its health care bill by a narrow 220 to 215 margin, with 39 Democrats voting against it. Since then, the one Republican who voted for it -- Joseph Cao -- has indicated that he would not support the bill a second time around given the weaker language on abortion in the Senate version. In addition, Florida Rep. Robert Wexler already retired prematurely. Factor in Murtha's death today, and Pelosi is down to 217 votes. This doesn't even take into account the pro-life Democrats led by Bart Stupak who are prepared to vote "no." While there's been talk that Pelosi had some votes in reserve the first time around, the point is that those members felt they needed to vote against the bill -- and the political environment has deteriorated substantially for Democrats since then. ...

I think that pretty much covers all the bases. My one real regret is how this man died. I read this morning he died because his large intestine was damaged during the gallbladder surgery. The article didn't go into in-depth detail, probably because they don't have them yet. But if Mr. Murtha died because of some error on the part of his surgeon, you can bet it will be used in the argument against tort reform.
